 1) Porto remarkable buildings of contemporary architecture - Full day (July 24th)

Departure from Guimarães to Porto.

In the Boavista quarters, half way between the historical centre and Foz, we can find a building with a volume and originality that we cannot stop noticing: the Casa da Música
(House of Music) designed by the world famous Dutch architect Rem Koolhaas. Constructed from top to bottom for the presentation of various and different entertainment projects, this building camouflages the traditional “shoe-box” musical room (the rectangular form that remains the best guarantee of perfect acoustics), in the shape of a concrete diamond that challenges gravity and open itself emphasizing the relation between interior and exterior public space. With an outside plaza full of travertine marble waves, Casa da Música, is also known as a perfect spot for young skaters.

The tour proceeds for a Visit to Serralves Museum of Contemporary Art the first project of its kind in Portugal and represents the largest multicultural centre in the North mission to increase the public interest in contemporary art and issues in contemporary society. In the collection of Serralves we can find art pieces from Andy Warhol to Richard Serra, Helena Almeida or Paula Rego. Design by the Pritzker awarded architect Alvaro Siza Vieira, this building has a unique simplicity of white volumes dialoging with the beautiful landscape of Serralves gardens.

The The Casa de Chá da Boa Nova is a very known tea house and restaurant. It was one of the first buildings designed by the architect Álvaro Siza Vieira between 1958 and 1963. Build on the rocks, only two meters from the water, having as background the ocean, is the perfect too watch the sunset from its panoramic windows. The Casa de Chá is it paradigmatic example of “Porto Architecture” concerned with comfort, scale, context, and a complex craftwork detail that only seams possible that time.
